            Highly active hydrated and black catalytic surfaces or surface layers are prepared by treating a metal such as Co or Ni, or a readily reducible ferromagnetic alloy with an aqueous solution of a chlorite, suitably after roasting and treatment with steam.  Gives numerous details of different treatments.
