Describes apparatus, and a process is employed for producing gases consisting largely of H₂ and CO, which involves employing substantially N₂-free O₂ together with inflammable hydrocarbon gases low in N₂ as a blast gas in metallurgical reduction processes carried out in furnaces requiring the use of a blast, as in the reduction of iron ore. CH₄-rich waste gases from oil-synthesis and coal-hydrogenation processes, coke-oven gas, or natural gas may be used.
