            CO is catalytically hydrogenated at an elevated pressure.  A difficultly reducible metal oxide, preferably Co oxide, is used as the catalyst.  The oxide is diluted with diatomaceous earth to give 0.5-40 gm. of effective metal catalyst per l. of contact mass.
