1062. HIRSCH, J. H., AND BOEGEL, M. J. (Gulf Research & Development Co.).  Production of Gas Comprising Hydrogen and Carbon Monoxide.  United States Patent 2,578,475.  Dec. 11, 1951.  Chem. Abs., vol. 46, 1952, p. 2271.

Gas mixture with a high ratio of H2 to CO is secured by introducing into a spark-ignition internal-combustion engine a mixture of a hydrocarbon gas, such as natural gas with O2 such that the molecular ratio of O2 to natural gas varies 0.75-0.9:1.  This mixture is compressed and ignited just before the top of the stroke.  Gives an equation for determining desirable relations between pressure and gas-O2 ratios.  The products are quickly released to atmospheric pressure; this cools them so that no further reaction occurs.  H2-CO ratios as high as 1.6:1 can be obtained in this manner.
