Conversion of CO to hydrocarbons, aldehydes, or alcohols is carried out in the presence of catalysts consisting of metals of Group VIII of the periodic system 0.5-60%, preferably 5-30%, in the form of silicates.  Further the catalysts should contain less than 2%, preferably less than 1%, alkali silicate.  The catalysts are distinguished by a high degree of stability and long life.  In addition to their use for the gasoline and Oxo syntheses, they can also be used for the removal of CO from gas by hydrogenation to CH4.
