      1106.  ------.  [HUBBE-FARENHOLTZ G. m. b. H.]  [Process for Obtaining and Improving Synthetic Fatty Acids.]  German Patent Appl. H 152,778, Aug. 25, 1937 (Cl. IV a-23 d).  FIAT Reel R-6, frames 4,911-4,928; PB 73,554.

In production and improvement of synthetic fatty acids, the acids, after saponification with alkali or earth alkali, are subjected in the absence of oxidizing gases and H2 to a longer treatment at 280°-360°, preferably 290°-240°.  An excess of at least 5% of the effective alkaline saponifying agent is used.  Heating is carried out after the air had been driven off with steam, CO, CO2, or N2.  The fatty acids are improved by heating to the melted condition with or without an excess of the saponifying agent or other effective alkaline compound at normal or subpressure.  Powdered metallic soaps are first obtained, and these are heated with stirring or dispersion to 280°-360° in a high-boiling and neutral medium, and neutral gases such as steam, CO2, or N2 are passed through.  The so pretreated and improved fatty acids in the form of their aqueous soda soaps are finally extracted with benzine to remove the unsaponifiable constituents or they are distilled.
