Abstract

PURPOSE: To simplify facilities by lowering the inlet temp. of a catalyst bed, by using a methanizer in which a lower-temperature shift catalyst comprising a Cu/Zn system is provided in the upstream side and a methanization catalyst is provided in the downstream side in methanizing a gas containing CO and H2.

CONSTITUTION: A methanizer in which a low-temperature shift catalyst 5 comprising a Cu/Zn system is provided in the upstream side and a methanization catalyst 7 such as an Ni or Ru catalyst which is highly active at 250-300oC is provided in the downstream side is used. A mixture consisting of a gas containing Co and H2 and steam is fed through a line 1 to the methanizer 3 and methanized. Since the shift catalyst 5 which is highly active at a low temperature is provided in the upstream side, the inlet temperature of the catalyst bed is lowered to 180oC. Accordingly, the quantity of the heat of reaction, which can be dealt with for each stage of the reactor, is greatly increased so that the number of the stages of the reactor can be reduced.
